Lorene and I went a discover tour to see the Boeing plant. We met the bus at Shopco on Martin Way, which is the pickup point for Discovery Tours in Olympia. We took to bus towards Tacoma. Before we got to Seattle, we had lunch at an elementary school lunchroom. We were served by the students. It was a delicious lunch and very well served. It isn't easy to feed that many people in a short period of time.
After lunch, we rode to the Boeing plant in Seattle. We were met by a tour guide. The guide gave us an idea of what we would see. We entered a Boeing bus and rode to the large building where the planes were being assembled. Our guide took us into the tunnels under the large hanger to a balcony where we could look down on the planes being assembled. The building is so large that for the employees to get around from one place to another they use bicycles. We looked down on four different models of planes in various stages of completion. The guide did a good job of describing to us what we were looking at.
The building is massive with overhead cranes that can carry parts to each section of the building. The assembly of the main part of the plane was done in this building. The wings were pre-assembled and flown in from another plant and attached at this point. It was very instructive and well worth the trip.
